The 27 Waterfalls of the Rio Damajagua Cascades – Dominican Republic
The 27 Waterfalls was our only excursion during our trip to the Dominican Republic. There many operators that offer tours to the waterfalls, the one we chose was Top3Tours for $59USD per person. We only wanted to do a ½ day excursion, so we opted to do the bottom 12 waterfalls. Our driver arrived to our resort on time to pick us up and was very professional, the vehicle was clean and had air conditioning. The drive from Puerto Plata to The Rio Damajagua Cascades where the waterfalls are located is approximately 40mins but it felt like 90mins due to our driver taking detours along the way to show us the city.
When we finally got to the excursion entrance we were greeted by our personal guide and fitted with a life jacket and helmet which is mandatory. If you are planning on booking this tour it is highly recommended you bring water shoes or shoes you don’t mind getting wet.
They have a few facilities on site which include:
- Small store (selling watershoes, bottled water, soda, snacks)
- Personal Lockers.
- Change Rooms.
- Excursion information booth.
From the entrance to the waterfalls is a 30min walk in the jungle, be warned that with the heat and humidity this can be challenging for some people. Our guide did stop for 2 small breaks on the way up the mountain to let us drink water and rest.
If you are bringing a GoPro camera with you I recommend attaching it to a floating handle so if you loose your grip when you are jumping it will float to the surface.
Once we arrived at the top of the 12 water falls we were guided on each jump and slide until we were safely at the bottom. If nerves get the best of you there are walkways and paths around some of the bigger jumps, but where is the fun in that? The tallest falls were 25ft and the water was clear and refreshing after a long hot walk through the jungle. The scenery is amazing, and it is worth while to stop and take in the beautiful surroundings. Once we were at the bottom of the falls we had a short 15min walk back to the entrance where our guide appreciated getting tipped for his services. Our driver was waiting and offered us bottled water for the drive back to the resort. We were expecting to do directly back to the resort but instead he took a detour to a little shop in the middle of nowhere for us to look at hand carved items. Although we didn’t feel pressured to purchase anything we did find this annoying as we didn’t expect a 15min detour on the way back.
Let’s Cut To The Chase
I highly recommend this excursion and you can’t go wrong with $59 per person. Everyone was very professional, and we had a great time. If you are going to Puerto Plata make sure you book the 27 waterfalls with Top3Tours, you won’t be disappointed!
