Budget Travelling 101: Chicago
I must admit Chicago wasn’t on my bucket list of destinations to visit but I spent a weekend in Chi-Town and loved it. You may be surprised to know that Chicago is quite affordable for a quick weekend trip depending on where you live. Whether you are looking for a change of scenery or to watch your favorite sports team, the people of Chicago make you feel welcome.
O’Hare vs. Midway
There are two options when flying into Chicago, O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport. Both have there advantages depending where you are going.
O’Hare International Airport
O’Hare is the primary airport serving Chicago and is a major hub for connecting international flights. Although it has been voted “Best Airport in North America” it is also one of the busiest in the world. Located 17 miles northwest of the Loop it can be a long commute depending where you want to go after you land.
Midway International Airport
Midway is the smaller of the two airports and is located southwest of Chicago and only 8 miles from the Loop. It is serviced by the Chicago Transit Authority’s Orange Line which makes this airport ideal if your destination is downtown. Midway services smaller aircraft so if you got a great price on flights chances are you will be landing here.
If you have never had a chance to experience a live NFL game at Soldier Field you are missing out. Everything from the pregame tailgating to the roar of the crowd cheering on the Bears, it is an experience like non-other. Soldier Field is serviced by many forms of public transit and is a short walk from the Chicago Loop. When purchasing tickets you don’t have to worry about what section you are sitting as all the seats have a great view. We recommend using a reliable source like Stubhub when purchasing tickets.
The Chicago Loop
The loop is the business district of the city and is home to many great restaurants and shops. You can take the CTA’s Orange Line right from midway airport to the Loop for a day of sight seeing and shopping. If shopping isn’t your thing there are many other activities going on such as Skydeck Chicago, outdoor skating in the winter or visit Cloud Gate at Millennium Park.
Food, Food and more Food!
Some of the best pizza you will ever eat is found in the Windy City. One of the best hamburgers I have ever had came from Chicago at a place called Burger Bar. The Loop has may places to eat whether it’s Burgers, Pizza or Chinese Cuisine it has something for everyone. Some of the best places to eat are:
- Eleven City Diner
- Burger Bar
- Giordano’s Pizza
- Epic Burger
You can definitely travel to Chicago on the cheap, depending on the time of year. Watch your prices, stay downtown in a little hotel on the Loop and enjoy some of America’s best food.
